Monika Tokarzewska: The dialogism of the metaphor (in German)

Jan 8th, 2015 | By | Category: Cultural Studies, Lectures

The terms „Gemeinschaft“ and „Gesellschaft“ have played a key role in German sociology ever since Ferdinand Tönnies published his groundbreaking monograph with both of them in its title. But what is the meaning of these concepts outside of the German-speaking world? What difficulties are there for a translator to overcome when transferring both terms into a different language? In her lecture Monika Tokarzewska reveals the deep cultural and historical dimension of this problem; she reflects on her own translation practice to illustrate how a real-life dialogue between cultures works.

Dr. Monika Tokarzewska is Assistant Professor at the Department of German Studies at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, where she co-founded a comparative course. She translated several works of Georg Simmel into Polish.
